Glenmalure Valley Floor: Easy Loop Route
A flat circular walk that stays low and stays comfortable. No steep climbs, no scrambling — just valley views and quiet spots to rest.
Why This Route Works for Everyone
This isn't a mountain walk. It's a valley walk — and there's a big difference. You're walking on flat ground following the Avonbeg River as it flows through the floor of Glenmalure. The entire loop is roughly 4 kilometers and takes about 90 minutes at a leisurely pace. Most importantly, there's no elevation gain to speak of.
We've designed this route specifically for walkers who want mountain scenery without the mountain effort. The valley walls rise around you, creating that feeling of being in something grand and wild, but your feet stay on easy ground the whole way.
The Route: Start to Finish
You'll start at the Glenmalure Lodge car park. It's well-signed and there's plenty of space. From there, the path heads northwest along the river. You'll immediately notice how quiet it is — even on busy weekends, the valley floor stays peaceful because most people head uphill toward Lugnaquilla.
The first kilometer is straightforward. The path is clear, the ground is firm, and the river's on your left. You're walking through natural forest in places, with open grassland in others. Around the 1.5-kilometer mark, you'll reach a small stone bridge. Cross it — this is where the loop really starts.
The Return: Easy Climbing
After the bridge, the path climbs — but we're talking gentle here. You'll gain maybe 80 meters over the next kilometer, spread across a proper walking trail. It's nothing steep. Most people don't even notice they're climbing because the gradient's so easy and the views keep your attention.
This section takes you along the eastern side of the valley. You've got the river below you now, and the views open up. The final stretch loops back toward the lodge through forest, losing the elevation you gained without any strain on your knees. By the time you reach the car park, you'll feel like you've had a proper walk without feeling hammered.
Practical Tips for This Walk
These small things make a real difference to your experience.
Bring Water
There's no water source along the route. You'll want at least 500ml, more if it's warm. The river's running but you don't want to drink from it directly.
Good Shoes Matter
The ground's mostly firm, but it can get muddy in places, especially near the river. Waterproof walking shoes with decent grip will keep you comfortable and safe.
Check the Weather
Glenmalure can get wet quickly. Even if it's not raining at the car park, mist can roll in fast. A light waterproof jacket's always a good idea.
Timing & Crowds
Weekday mornings are quietest. Summer weekends get busier, but the valley floor itself stays peaceful. Start early if you want solitude — parking fills up by 10am on nice Saturdays.
Navigation
The path's clear and well-used. You won't need a map for this one, but having the OS map in your phone's a nice backup. The route's impossible to get lost on.
Photography Spots
The bridge crossing offers great valley views. The eastern side of the return has the best light in the afternoon. The river section is prettiest in early morning when mist's still on the water.
Where to Rest Along the Way
This walk's got several natural rest spots — which is exactly why we designed it this way. You're not forced to push through. You can stop whenever you need to.
About halfway through, there's a flat grassy area near the river. It's perfect for sitting. The stone bridge we mentioned earlier also has space to stop and look around. On the return, the forest section provides shade if it's sunny. These aren't fancy rest stops with benches, but they're comfortable, quiet places to catch your breath and take in the surroundings.
The whole point of this route is that you're not fighting the terrain. If you need to stop, stop. If you want to go slower, go slower. There's no timer on enjoyment.
Walking Safety Note
This route description is informational. While it's designed as an easy walk suitable for most abilities, walking conditions change with weather and season. Always check current conditions, wear appropriate gear, and turn back if conditions deteriorate. If you have health concerns, consult your doctor before attempting any walking route. Weather in Wicklow mountains can change rapidly — always be prepared.
The Bottom Line
Glenmalure's easy loop gives you everything a good walk should offer — scenery, peace, a sense of accomplishment, and zero regrets about joint pain afterward. It's the kind of walk you can do regularly without dreading the effort. You're getting fresh air, movement, and real mountain views without the punishment.
Whether you're getting back into walking after time off, you're looking for something less demanding than the bigger peaks, or you just want a nice afternoon outside, this route delivers. The valley floor doesn't get the attention that Lugnaquilla does — which means you get the views with the quiet.
